How a Tiny Kitchen Became Grand Ave's Favorite Spot

It all started in 2009 when John and Maria Kowalski turned a modest storefront on Grand Avenue into something St Paul had never quite tasted before. Armed with a wood-burning oven imported from Naples, a family dough recipe, and an unshakeable belief that pizza deserved better, Punch Pizza was born.

The name? A reminder that every bite should hit with flavor — bold, honest, and unforgettable. No shortcuts, no frozen dough, no compromises. Just real ingredients, real fire, and real care in every pie that comes out of our kitchen.

Over 15 years later, we've grown into one of St Paul's most beloved neighborhood restaurants — but we still use the same original dough recipe, the same local farms, and the same small-batch approach that made our first customers regulars for life.

2009

The First Punch

John and Maria Kowalski open Punch Pizza at 769 Grand Ave with a single wood-burning oven and a menu of just six pizzas. Lines form within the first week.

2012

Twin Cities' Best Pizza Award

City Pages names Punch Pizza the best independent pizzeria in the Twin Cities. The recognition brings a surge of new regulars and helps us expand our kitchen.

2015

Farm-to-Table Partnership

We formalize sourcing agreements with five local Minnesota farms, ensuring seasonal, fresh toppings year-round. Our seasonal menu specials launch to rave reviews.

2018

Dining Room Expansion

Growing demand leads us to expand into the adjacent space, doubling our seating capacity and adding a private dining room for events and celebrations.

2021

Online Ordering & Delivery

We launch our own delivery service and online ordering platform, bringing the Punch experience to doorsteps across St Paul. Demand exceeds all expectations.

2024

50,000 Happy Guests & Beyond

We celebrate welcoming our 50,000th guest and introduce a refreshed menu with five new artisan pies. The next chapter of Punch Pizza has just begun.
